Jeffrey Alan Basinger Leadership Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student who has maintained a 2.5 GPA and has demonstrated financial need. Student must self-identify as LGBTQ+ and agree to meet with representatives of the Basinger Scholarship Committee. Student must agree to be recognized at local LGBTQ events.

The student must be residents from one of the following western Colorado counties: Archuleta, Delta, Dolores, Eagle, Garfield, Grand, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Jackson, Lake, La Plata, Mesa, Moffat, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, Pitkin, Routt, Rio Blanco, San Juan, San Miguel, or Summit.

  3. In 500 or fewer words, please answer one of the following questions keeping in mind Jeffrey Basinger's legacy (Jeffrey Basinger died in 2018 and this scholarship honors his work and memory. Basinger was a long-time resident of Grand Junction and an activist and health educator. In 1992, he helped to found the Common Decency Coalition (later Western Equality), the first LGBTQ+ rights organization in Western Colorado. As a gay man living with HIV, he also was a tireless advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS helping to found the Western Colorado AIDS Project.): 1. People in LGBTQ+ communities, and those who live with HIV/AIDS, continue to face stigma. What strategies would you use to help reduce these stigmas? 2.
