Terry Wakefield — Kiwanis Endowed Music Scholarship

Terry is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Stephanie (Fred) Nichols (grandchildren Cooper and Cody), and Stacey Mascarenas (grandchildren Logan and Madison). He also leaves his brothers, Jake (Diane) Wakefield of IA and Lynn (Lynn Alice) Wakefield of PA; many nephews and nieces and their families plus special friends, Donna’s family, and those of his sons-in-law.

Terry received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and his master’s degree from the University of Oregon. He spent 12 years in the Navy and served on aircraft carriers and destroyers traveling the Pacific. He met his wife Donna while he was the Disbursing Officer of North Island Naval Air Station at San Diego, CA. The Navy allowed their family to spend two years in Taiwan where Terry was an advisor to the Taiwanese Navy.

Together the family moved to Grand Junction in 1977 and started Wakefield Property Management & Brokerage Company. Terry and Donna worked side by side until their retirement in 2009. Their daughters then took over the running of the company. Terry and Donna had almost 48 wonderful years together His family thought he must have been born singing as he always sang in school and church choirs all his life. He sang with Shuman Singers for several years and was with the Grand Junction Choral for 22 years and served as its president for several years.

Terry was active in many community projects. He was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club for many years. His favorite projects involved helping distribute funds to various non-profit organizations in the valley that helped serve children. He certainly also enjoyed being involved in the Kiwanis Octoberfest and Pancake Breakfast activities but most importantly the deep friendships he had with club members. Terry served on the University of Colorado Presidents Leadership Class Committee from 1977 until 2009 to assist in selecting applicants for scholarships. Terry was also the president of the Museum of Western Colorado board from 1993 -1996 and even served as its interim director for a year. He will also be remembered as a member of “The God Squad” where he, his pastor and friend, Sam Day, with other friends rode dirt bikes all over western Colorado. When the wives decided they were too old for that, he switched to taking his Four Runner over many mountain passes. Fortunately, his grandsons were able to enjoy some of those trips as well. He was very happy to spend a good amount of time traveling to watch his grandchildren in their music, sports, and gymnastic activities. He loved his family and friends and seldom met anyone he didn’t consider a friend. He will be missed terribly.
