Richard G. Lyttle Endowed Scholarship

In August 1885, Meeker Colorado was founded as a town, and James Lyttle, along with John V. “Jack” Houston started a newspaper plant and began publishing The Meeker Herald.

James’ son, Richard “Dick” G. Lyttle Sr., helped with the family newspaper and took over operations on his father’s death in 1925.

Dick’s son, Richard “Rich” G. Lyttle, Jr., was born Dec. 22, 1924. Rich attended school in Meeker and graduated from Rio Blanco County High School. Rich attended college at the University of Colorado and Bemidji State University. Rich followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and his father and also worked for the family newspaper. Rich was considered by many to be the preeminent expert of Meeker history, and much of that history had been documented by his father and grandfather. The Meeker Herald continues today as the Rio Blanco Herald Times.

In 1988, Rich created the Richard G. Lyttle Scholarship Trust in honor of his father for the purpose of encouraging and supporting students from Meeker High School who could not otherwise afford it to pursue a career in journalism or mass communication. The trust has transferred the administration of the trust funds to the Foundation for administration of the Richard G. Lyttle Endowed Scholarship.
