Howard E. Scott Maverick Scholarship
The Fund is being established by Howard E. Scott to provide necessary financial support to a student who, like himself, has a deep, inborn and abiding independence of thought and action. In his own words, ""Maverick is the team name for the college, but a team is just that, a combined and controlled action. A Maverick, to the contrary ( as I learned from long experience) is an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party. The Maverick is a doubter, desiring to examine received data. The conclusion reached and supported comes, not from group or creedal doctrine, but from analysis, observation and experience. This generally leaves the Maverick standing alone or at least in the short term minority. But the true Maverick stands and does not ""go with the flow"" or join in a majority vote for apparent comity. It is, alas, often a lonely road, but principle prohibits easy accommodation.
""I started at Mesa Junior College by splitting out of high school in January as a part of World War II speedup, completing two quarters before entering the service where l served in combat in the 8th Air Force out of England. I returned to Mesa and graduated in 194 7. I received a BA from the University of Denver and was selected to Phi Beta Kappa. I then went to work in Washington, DC for the Honorable Wayne N. Aspinall for eight years and pursued a variety of tasks thereafter. Throughout, I was ever the boat rocker, the questioner, the doubter, but withal, one with positive suggestions for change and improvement.
""To which end, any recipient must be more than a real or apparent nonconformist; the selectee must be one with a positive set of values and policy and program successions. Ambiguous compromise becomes almost habitual without a Maverick standing for principle in the face of a tentative majority. Further, the selectee must have an abiding dedication to lawful conduct and may not be one believing in ecotage, unlawful assembly or occupation, or holding that casual use of drugs is a non-violent crime. Each user, however casual, is a part of the evil chain extending through a sea of corruption from the grower seeking a cash crop to the delivery point. The scholarship is to support ideas, not subversion. The goal is to support direct statements and clear policy, not mystic symbolism and mob hysteria. I assume the way will be straight and the gate narrow and that few will pass. I hope (I have ever been hopeful even in defeat) that the few selected will sustain and expand this dream so that the quantity of Mavericks may expand to a number more befitting the quality of Mavericks.""
