Erskine-Peyton Family Scholarship
The Erskine and Peyton families, next door neighbors for more than 50 years, helped create an extended family of extra parents and extra siblings for all of us. Through our families, we have a number of connections with CMU that we want now to pay forward. Janet Peyton was for many years a secretary in Mesa College’s fine arts department. Her daughter, Marla, who is also part of this scholarship, worked in Mesa’s financial aids. Mike Erskine is a 1976 graduate of Colorado Mesa University, the first-year baccalaureate degrees were awarded. His mother, Gen, retired and was committed to completing her education at CMU. At the age of 60, she received her bachelor’s degree. Mike’s niece, Alexis Leigh, after one tour in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, went back to school and chose nursing as a career. It was grueling and tough. She recently graduated cum laude as a R.N. She is following in the footsteps of her paternal grandmother, Doris Leigh, an R.N. who served in London hospitals during the blitz of WWII. It is for all the hard work and dedication that nursing demands, that this scholarship has been designed to be a tribute to the nurses in our families and to also help students achieve a tremendous goal.
