Alex and Alma Wilkie Scholarship

Alex and Alma Wilkie Scholarship

The Alex and Alma Wilkie Scholarship was established by Dr. Diana J. Wilkie and Mr. Davis B. Lawrence in recognition of Alexander Hamilton and Alma Ruth Wilkie.

Dr. Diana J. Wilkie, PhD, RN, FAAN, granddaughter of Alex and Alma Wilkie and daughter of Archie E. Wilkie and Vesta Jean Howard, and her husband, Davis B. Lawrence, BA, son of Drew and Gypsy Lawrence, established this endowed scholarship fund to honor Alex and Alma in perpetuity.

Both Diana, a 1982 graduate of Mesa State College’s baccalaureate nursing program and recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award, and Davis have a strong commitment to college education as a means to improve the human condition—especially for people from disadvantaged backgrounds and for nursing students pursuing their professional education. Davis and Dian wish that their financial advantage, made possible through their education, be used to help others gain a similar advantage through a college education.

Alex (1908–1991) and Alma (1912–2002) were residents of Mesa County for more than 60 years, contributing to the Fruita area’s farm and dairy economies. Of their six children who lived to adulthood—Alex, Archie, Agnes, and James—there were 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren when this scholarship was established.
